Prevention of deformation of marble cladding panels

Exploitable results

The potential economic benefit opened up by the application of the results is enormous, accompanied by further benefits, such as reduced risk of accidents, and preservation of historical monuments. The results created much interest, not only in the scientific community, but also within civil engineering. A paper, presented by the Technical University of Vienna, won the 'BEST PAPER AWARD' by the renowned American Society of Civil Engineers. Moreover, some further research and development would open up a considerable additional potential of public benefits. An expert system, established as a follow-up of the project, could be the basis of a modification of international standards concerning the requirements to be met by all kinds of natural stone material (not only marble), in order to be suitable for outdoor cladding applications. This would not only prevent further cost through damages, but also preserve (or rehabilitate) natural stone material for such use. Moreover, it would protect European natural stone industry from cheap overseas imports, not having surpassed comparable suitability tests
