Testing initiative for global requirements on magnetic and IC cards systems

Exploitable results

Card systems are used today in the core of important applications that have become normal for us: identification, credit, telecommunications, health or transport among others. Until recently, systems based on integrated circuit (IC) cards (ICC) were mainly local experiences with a limited number of cards issued and terminals installed. The situation has changed as a result of strategic firms decisions in the telecommunications sector, financial institutions, Internet, etc. Quality and interoperability of the different elements of these systems have become very important parameters to check. Work is being carried out on the development of standards containing the criteria that cards must meet. The project carried out the following work: revision of questioned physical tests; definition of new physical tests; HiCo and TFC magnetic strip analysers study; emulators for the exhaustive analysis of the communication between ICC and IFD. With respect to revision of tests, X-rays, vibrations and electromagnetic fields were not relevant. New tests proposed involved: overall card abrasion; small area card abrasion; rolling test; impact test; contacts deactivation in abnormal conditions; principles for 2 tests (new vibrations and electromagnetic compatability/electromagnetic interference, EMC/EMI). A study was made of the results obtained from the three European magnetic strip analysers. With respect to protocol testing, two emulators were designed and constructed. They need customization for each application. Test services are offered.
