Development and construction of a self-erectingsteel tube tower for Enercon 55/1 MW wind energy converter

Many of the best wind turbine sites are located in areas where access for heavylifting equipment is quite difficult. The objective of this project was to develop, design and produce an erection device and associated tower, for the MW sizedEnercon E-66 wind turbine, which was developed in parallel. It was intended thatthis would enable the installation of MW sized machines without the use of largecranes. The new crane system was intended to be able to assemble the towersegments, as well as the wind energy converter itself, using as little additionalequipment as possible. A further objective was that this crane should be suitablefor container transportation and for use with steel as well as concrete towers.
