The deployment and testing of a prototype OSPREY wave energy converter Phase I

The primary objective of the OSPREY project was to install a prototype oscillatingwater column (OWC) type wave energy collector in the near-shore region off thecoast of Dounreay in Northern Scotland. This was intended to validate, at full scale, energy capture, structural loading and economic forecasts made on the basis oftheoretical model studies. Additionally, the specific objectives of the project alsoincluded the design and evaluation of a turbo generation system for power take offfrom the OWC device. This was to comprise a pneumatic turbine electrical generatorand control system for subsequent manufacture and fitment to the collector. Alsothe development of a platform to permit the testing and monitoring of this systemand the collection of environmental and structural loading data under real seaconditions.
