Hybrid combined cycle with pressurized fluidized bed combustor

While work continues on refining integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) technology, the feasibility and technical potential of novel power system concepts for post-IGCC plant is of increasing interest. Such systems should have even higher efficiency and minimum carbon dioxide emissions. In this project, new, so-called hybrid, power plant combined cycle schemes were assessed, involving a coal-fired pressurized fluidized bed combustor (PFBC) with an afterburner for maximum power-raising efficiency.

The work involved improvement of modelling codes and their application to new combined cycle schemes; techno-economic assessments of newly-conceived power plant schemes; and experiemtnal verification of the viability of burning coal in a mixture of recycling flue gas and oxygen.
