Theoretical and experimental studies for a compact H2 generator, integrated with second generation fuel cells

The project aimed to develop a prototype adiabatic reactor for the catalytic, selective partial oxidation of methane (CSPOM) into hydrogen. This would enable a compact hydrogen generator to be integrated with second generation fuel cells, thus improving their operating capabilities and overall efficiency.

Fuel cells normally use hydrogen to generate electricity. Due to the unavailability of pure hydrogen, other fuels can be used, such as methane or methanol. This means that a further conversion step is needed to transform the fuel into hydrogen. This concept has only been considered since 1993 for fuel cell systems, so the project marked an important step in the development of commercially viable systems. Involvement in the JOULE programme was the first step in prototype development.
