A new methodology for energy and environment synthesis of industrial processes

Exploitable results

Industrial processes are often highly energy intensive and have a significant environmental impact. Many process operators today aim to improve this situation and a major concern is therefore the inter-relationship between energy savings and environmental protection. The engineering tools developed in this project quantify and improve both the energy efficiency and environmental-friendliness of industrial processes. Operating industrial processes in an energy efficient and environmentally acceptable way is a major concern for industrial companies. The objective of this project was to use mathematical programming and thermodynamic analysis to develop computer software tools. These aim not only to obtain minimum cost energy requirements in an industrial process, but also to include environmental concerns in this optimisation. Process modifications which tackle the use of energy together with environmental concerns can then be implemented.
