Hydroprocessing of heavy petroleum fractions

The use of continuous catalytic hydroprocessing was investigated as ameans of transforming heavy petroleumresidues into clean, light transportation fuels. A three-fold catalyst systemconcept was used and kinetic studies of hydroprocessing reactions and activity time curves for each catalyst were performed. The project established thatthe feedstock is suitable for fluidised catalytic cracking to lighter hydrocarbonsof high value. The results havebeen highly successful, and furtherwork is being undertaken to scale-up the process to an industrial plant.
