Enhancement of the efficiency of IGCC power plants

Exploitable results

The design and performance of a coal-fired 415 MW integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) plant was investigated. The study starts from the design principles of the IGCC plant at Puertollano, Spain, and shows improvements which are achievable due to progress in gas turbine technology and process engineering. The main plant elements were an oxygen-blown gasifier, gas clean-up, gas turbine, steam generator and steam turbine. Thermal efficiencies of up to 49.2% were estimated from optimising the plant plus future developments in equipment and materials. The techno-economic data generated has contributed to the database for IGCC, and so will help stimulate the take-up of the technology by European utilities.
