Development of a network of excellence of municipalities and regions for renewable energy development and use

Considerable knowledge regarding the development and use of renewable energies currently exists within the municipalities and regions of Europe. In many cases, however, these valuable experiences are never shared and this leads to a considerable duplication of effort and wasted time and resources in renewable energy development. The information exchange network developed during this project has facilitated the pooling of existing knowledge and therefore helped to address this issue.

To date, know-how and experience generated in the European Municipalities and regions with respect to the development of renewable energies have, in many cases, remained in isolation. Information and knowledge exchange has rarely taken place, demonstrating the need for a mechanism through which information can be gathered, evaluated and shared to link experiences and information on existing renewable energy systems throughout Europe. The objective of this project was to strengthen the co-operation between local and regional authorities and also further develop concepts and schemes for renewable energy use through the formation of an information exchange network. The aim was to identify a set of renewable energy concepts and schemes for European municipalities and develop a manual for the local integration of renewable energies for use by decision makers.
