Platform for engineering research and trials

Exploitable results

EXPERT operates the largest test platform in the EU ACTS Programme. It is closely associated - and co-located - with the Swiss National Host. Facilities and technical support are often shared between these 2 organisations. EXPERT has produced its own technical achievements in terms of the development and validation of: - advanced broadband signalling features from ITU-T, Capability Set 2.1 (in-call modification and 3rd-party control) - the dynamic re-allocation of bandwidth to ATM VPs - the efficient routing of new connections onto least-loaded paths - a design and performance evaluation tool for broadband networks. The project has also carried out theoretical studies and experiments on P-NNI (Private Network-to-Network Interface) interoperability, the Available Bit-Rate service and the conveyance of TCP traffic using the Unspecified Bit-Rate service category. Due to the facilities available in Basel (a supported site with 10 different ATM switches, PC, SUN and Silicon Graphics terminals, terminal adapters, good communications infrastructure both internally and to the outside world), the testbed is being used as a validation platform by more than 10 other ACTS projects. Furthermore, the distribution of 2 major EU conferences (IDC98/EXPO98 in Lisbon, and the Information Society Technologies conference in Vienna) to more than 15 sites (including Central and Eastern Europe, Japan and Canada) is also being organized by EXPERT partners. The project also hosts a school in Basel which is participating in the G7/GIBN "Virtual Classroom" project, with other schools in Germany, Ireland and Canada.
