Qualification of Laser Assisted Surface Technologies

Laser surface treatment techniques (LST) for improvement of the service life of tools and parts from different industrial sectors were developed and applied to tests samples and components. The components were tested under real production conditions. The techniques under investigation were alloying, cladding and dispersing with powder additives using CO2 , Nd:YAG and high power diode laser radiation. The components investigated were forging and drawing dies, pressing plates for disk clutch production, machine parts for plastic processing technology, pressing tools for sand lime brick industry and EDM machine beds.
The work includes the characterisation of the surface layers and the investigation of the operational properties. For some of the forging and extrusion dies an increase of lifetime of up to 30% was achieved by laser alloying. Several pressing plates for disk clutch production and EDM machine beds were repaired by laser cladding. For the protection of extruder backflow valves new layer were developed, which show very good wear performance (more than 10 times better than the actual used layers). The dispersed layers developed for the pressing tools for the sand lime industry show good wear performance, but the application to the plates resulted in too much distortion.
The layers as well as the processing technology developed in this project may be applied in many other industrial sectors as for aircraft components, motor components, machine components, plastic and aluminium injection tools.
