Enterprise wide standard access to step distributed databases

Exploitable results

Issued from the AIT pilot phase and as such strongly user-driven, the RISESTEP project aimed at and succeeded in developing a middle-ware environment. It is based on the ISO STEP standard for data exchange and storage aspects, and on the OMG CORBA standard for the distribution aspects. Industry is increasingly competing in an international marketplace where strict control over cost and 'time to market' is vital to remain competitive. At the same time there is a growing need to work together within different departments of the same company, or for international partnership or grouping. These pressures increase the need to improve the integration between the participants in these global or 'extended' enterprises. A key tool of this integration is the sharing of standardised data throughout the enterprise. In this context, the implementation of a 'specialised' middle-ware environment allowing the co-operation of distributed Digital Mock-up Units appears as a pre-requisite for concurrent engineering applications (design engineering, after-sale documentation,...). Issued from the AIT pilot phase and as such strongly user-driven, the RISESTEP project (Esprit 20456) aimed at and succeeded in developing such a middle-ware environment based on the ISO STEP standard for data exchange and storage aspects, and OMG CORBA standard for the distribution aspects. RISESTEP reaches the following objectives : - identification of the types of CIME information to be distributed - specification the distributed architecture required to communicate this information throughout the enterprise - development prototypes (four clients and five servers) using this architecture - proof of the viability of that a shared Digital Mock Up in an heterogeneous environment using standards (STEP and CORBA 2). - provision of a software demonstration based on pre-defined user scenarios and showing the potential application of such a distributed Digital Mock-up Units integration.
