Exploitable results

The objectives of the contractors were to develop, on the basis of the various and widely different procedures currently available in Europe, and in cooperation with CEN TC 104 ("building materials") and TC 292 ("water characterization") a procedure for the evaluation of the leaching of pollutants from concrete, to which "recording raw materials" such as fly ash may be added. The resulting procedure is intended to be accepted by CEN TC 104 as the basis for a future European standard method for the determination of the environmental quality of concrete, as required for this application of the construction products directive (P9/106/EEC). The objectives involved screening of the existing test methods and other available information to select a few methods for further study; collaborative laboratory evaluation of the selected methods. Drafting and preliminary evaluation of one or two proposed standard powders; testing of the draft procedures in an intercomparison in which all institutes active in CEN TC 104 have the opportunity to participate; preparation of a draft protocol suitable for use as starting document in the process of preparing a CEN standard; data evaluation in order to obtain information on the leaching mechanisms; development of mechanistic models to estimate the longer thin leaching behavior of concrete on the basis of the developed short-term testing procedure. The achievements comprised a report on the intercomparison; an updated database (available at ECN, Putin) containing the results of the leaching tests; a protocol accepted by CEN TC 104 as starting basis for a standard; reporting on the progress in mechanistic model development and hence in the prediction of long-term leaching behaviour on the basis of short-term testing.
