European Collaboration On Transition Training Research for Improved Safety; ECOTTRIS

The objectives of ECOTTRIS were:
-To produce an accident and incident analysis (from real flight as well as from training sessions) in relation to transition training factors from which operational and/or training factors can be derived which lead to possible safety risks.
-To produce a skill and training analysis based upon which training requirements and recommendations can be derived which would lead to more effective transition training to compensate for the above mentioned risks.
-To recommend where applicable, e.g. where more effective procedures and/or training is not expected to be adequate to solve the problem, cockpit changes based on human factors standards. These recommendations will include retrofit items.

The ECOTTRIS programme took the findings of the FAA Human Factors Team (1996) well into account and focused on those findings that were associated with transition training for civil pilots converting from conventional to high technology 'glass' cockpits. The main objective was to improve existing transition training procedures.
Collection and analysis of data was central to the ECOTTRIS programme and involved a review of glass cockpit design philosophies and operational philosophies employed by airlines, accident and incident review, analysis of glass cockpit skills, structured interviews with pilots and training instructors and a training activity analysis of current training practices.

Recommendations were formulated concerning:
- Training objectives: what knowledge, skills or attitudes need to be mastered?
- What kind of training methods may be used to achieve the training objectives?
- What kind of training media could be used?
- What feedback is given to the trainee during and after an exercise?
- How is the achievement of training objectives assessed?

Main project outputs are:
- A review of glass cockpit design philosophies and operational philosophies employed by airlines (data-driven analysis);
- accident and incident review (data-driven analysis);
- analysis of glass cockpit skills (data-driven analysis);
- user consultation (structured interviews with pilots and training instructors) and training activity analysis of current training practices (data driven analysis);
- Partial training solutions that have been informally validated in an airline training environment such as CRM training materials specific for the glass cockpit and a low-cost simulation concept (developments).
