Time series of vertically integrated water vapour retrieved from GPS-data for the period Aug. 95 to Oct. 95, for validation and analyses of the weather situation; new and independent source

Summary:
An important aspect of the NEWBALTIC project is to systematically make use of novel satellite data information for an independent assessment of water vapour, cloud water and radiation fluxes.

Profiles of the integrated water vapour have been derived from GPS data for Aug. to Oct. 95 and evaluated. Recently 25 sites in Sweden and Finland have been used. There is good agreement with data from microwave radiometer and radiosonde data. The root mean square differences are of the order of 1 - 2 kg/m2.

This study shows that water vapour profiles retrieved from the GPS data make a very important contribution to the project as well as being important for future operational meteorological observing systems.
