Spatial modelling at the regional scale of the response and adaptation of soils and land use systems to climate change.

Exploitable results

There are two principal results arising from the IMPEL project: the model software and the scientific knowledge (conclusions and recommendations). These results are all Category B (nonexploitable results that may be of interest to other researchers). Given the policy orientated objectives of the project, the partners do not consider the foreground information developed within the project to be of commercial interest. The principal software developed within the project was: - The ACCESS soil and crop model (developed by Cranfield University, INRA-Montpellier, RISSA- Bucharest, ADAS-Gleadthorpe). - The SFARMOD farm-scale decision model (developed by Silsoe Research Institute with additional input by the University of Padova). - The IMPELERO field-scale water erosion model (developed by CSIC/IRNAS-Sevilla). - The Spatialisation procedures (developed by INRA-Montpellier). - The module Integrator software (developed by RISSA-Bucharest et al.) This software has reached an operational level with a certain amount of testing and analysis undertaken in contrasting regions of Europe. The development of software within the IMPEL project had the sole objective of facilitating the application of the modelling research tools in different European demonstration regions. The models were not, therefore, designed as commercially exploitable products because as complex research tools they are not easily useable by others. Thus, the partners have agreed that exploitation of the modelling software will be by the project consortium. It is also important to note that, with the exception of the Integrator software, all of the IMPEL modules were based on considerable amounts of background information brought to the project by the project partners. Because of this, the project partners have agreed that exploitation will be at the discretion of the owners of the background intellectual property of each model, and should not be in breach of existing user agreements. With the agreement of the background owners, the IMPEL modules may be made available to other researchers. The Integrator software is freely available for use, but is dependant on each of the individual IMPEL modules and, as such, its use and exploitation is subject to the' same conditions for the individual modules
