Angular-dependent light and total solar energy transmittance for complex glazing; ALTSET

The objective of the project ALTSET (Angular-dependent Light and Total Solar Energy Transmittance for Complex Glazing) was the scientific development of European standard test procedures for the determination of angular-dependent total solar energy transmittance and light transmittance for complex glazing and integrated shading elements.

The project has succeeded and reached the objective. The participants have developed a test procedure for the completely new field of solar calorimetric determination of the total solar energy transmittance. The test procedure is general applicable to all kind of glazing, shading elements and even opaque building products. In addition to that the project has extended existing procedures on light transmittance measurements with a set of recommendations and rules to be used also for complex glazing and angular-dependent measurements.

In the scientific work leading to the main objectives, a number of product models, practical tools for data analysis, sensitivity studies for experimental conditions and exhaustive experimental data have been created. These data as well as the general findings will be placed at the disposal of the public in fenestration and building industry through publication. They are covered in detail in a series of 63 participant reports, the main findings are described in selected aspects and cases in this overview document.

From scientific research the first steps to standardization and building regulations have been taken already within the project and contacts are established, however this transfer process will continue in the future for the ALTSET participant group. The results have to be filtered and condensed even more to be presented in publications to the scientific community.

The work presented in this document shows that testing angular-dependent light and total solar energy transmittance:
-Produces reliable data.
-Is useful for industry.
-Is ready for further standardization.
