Small abrasive water injection jets open new applications

Deliverables

The properties of AWIJs have been improved significantly. The cutting width was reduced below 0.3mm, which minimises the lost material during the cut. The reduction of jet diameter allows cutting finer contours, which opens application fields of precision cutting. Due to the use of fine abrasive material also the cutting quality has been improved. The cutting efficiency referring to the consumption of abrasive material, energy and water could be increased significantly. The range of materials to be cut is practically not limited. These improvements obtained by this project will open new application fields for AWIJs in machining valuable materials, precision and fine cutting, in processing sensitive materials and in all applications of conventional AWIJs. The end users of AWIJs will benefit directly on the increased application fields and the improvements, the equipment manufacturers indirectly due to the increase of the AWIJ market.
The prototype of a small cutting head consists of a centred by the cone of the collimation tube. A small water jet of 0.15mm diameter passes the mixing chamber of the cutting head body and enters the focussing tube of 0.3mm diameter and 30mm length. It is pre-aligned also by a cone to the jet of the water nozzle. The jet disintegrated in the mixing chamber enters the cutting head and creates a low pressure, which then is used for the pneumatic transport of the abrasive material into the cutting head. The cutting head is adaptable to practically all conventional AWIJ cutting units. It will be promoted by Böhler, Procer and Comadur. Stein-Moser will sell the necessary handling systems. Tal, Stein-Moser, WST Winkel and EBG will benefit from the cutting head directly.
Part of the project was the optimisation of the cutting head dimensions. The variation of the different parameters led to perceptions referring to the formation of abrasive water jets. These are important fundamentals for further developments of this cutting method. The equipment manufacturers will benefit directly of this, the end users will also make use of these insights for their benefit. The RTD performers will disseminate the results in agreement with the consortium and the European Commission at European conferences and in their national working groups.
