3-Dimensionality and Interactive Networked Collaboration for TRaditional Animation Production

Deliverables

One of the main products resulting of the 3DINCTRAP project is a software tool. These can and will be applied in the animation software, which is the basis of the project, CreaToon. Since the software is commercialised by ANDROME this is an exploitation route, which is only viable for ANDROME, not for any of the other partners, although it will also be beneficial for them as well. The developments done in 3DINCTRAP result in a new release of CreaToon on the market. However, not all features developed for the 3DINCTRAP project will be included immediately in the software; - It is anticipated that the modules relating to 2D/3D integration and 2.5D animation will serve as a basis in future (co-) production work; but essential improvements in this area are included in the software's next version; - The asset management tools perform well in the set-ups as targeted in the 3DINCTRAP proposal. Further additional R&D is needed in opening the road towards asset management for (really) large productions. Some features in the way resources are managed within CreaToon are included in the next release however since they are a substantial improvement on the way this is done in CreaToon now; - The networked collaboration tools perform equally well; but further development into commercial product is not yet planned. The animation partners, Animante Baleares as well as The Cut-Out Animation Co, will, thanks to their contributions in the development process by testing and advising on required features which keep CreaToon up-to-date with animation business needs, always be partners who are entitled to use the latest versions of the software. By working as beta -testers, they will even have an advantage since tools are at the earliest stages already at hand for them; although this also implies that their regular work cycle might be turned upside down occasionally by changes in the not-production features yet.
As a result of the knowledge and know-how built in the 3DINCTRAP project, the world of further developments in the areas of animation has grown. This is an area, which is a realistic exploitation route both for ANDROME itself, since development resources with the required expertise are at hand, as well as the partner LUC/EDM, which offers its substantial know-how in these projects. Since a number of development projects start as research projects, both options are dealt with in one result. Often further consultancy in the area of the animation business context or the R&D project settings is required, so the consultancy services are also part of this result. For ANDROME it is indeed to be expected that the dissemination activities will make the target group aware of the potential of the R&D results obtained in 3DINCTRAP. Fully compatible with its main current revenue stream of software development service, ANDROME should be able to render its according software services to interested third parties in the 3DINCTRAP target group. Generation of spin-off products/projects in collaboration with third parties is a potential exploitation possibility as well. Currently one of the promising projects involves the creation of 2.5D content/applications (such as games) on mobile devices. Other contacts are being pursued on entertainment and multimedia communication projects on set-top boxes. In these projects, we technically build on know-how gathered and extended in 3DINCTRAP. It is clear that the 3DINCTRAP project has increased the exposure and experience of ANDROME in the networked collaboration environments, so the likelihood of participation in further follow-up projects in the commercial or researching area (national as well as European) has grown as well. Opportunities in this context will be actively pursued as they come along. The "exploitation" route of subcontractor Limburg University Centre (LUC) - as a university - mainly involves generation of follow-up R&D projects. The Expertise centre for Digital Media (EDM), e.g., is a self-supporting non-profit research institute at the LUC. A considerable part of the EDM's annual turnover comes from collaboration with industry. A conventional way of "exploiting" the fundamental and applied research results is through this collaboration with industry, in which often bi-lateral follow-up projects of national or European research projects are set up. In several of these contract research projects, a technology transfer activity ensures that the companies can undertake further exploitation and developments on their own resources. Wavecrest Systems Ltd is a consultancy organisation that advises on the development and exploitation of technology of media and Multimedia. They do not benefit from project participation by receiving royalties or licenses from any sales of the CREATOON product or its derivatives. However, by participating in such activities, much general background knowledge and experience is gained. This experience makes Wavecrest Systems Ltd more "in demand" in providing their consultancy services.
One of the main products resulting of the 3DINCTRAP project is the production of animations. Within the consortium, partners who are involved in the creation of animations are: - Animante Baleares, a subsidiary of Androme and - The Cut-Out Animation Co 3DINCTRAP develops new animation production tools, which will improve the tool CreaToon on various accounts: a) Real time cut-out animation creation, integrating 2D and 3D techniques and providing 2,5D animation features b) Tools for asset management ¿ manage various assets which are part of an animation production c) Tools for interactive collaboration ¿ how to work interactively and real time jointly on an animation production They will be able to use the tools and enhancements, as they have been included in the 3DINCTRAP version of CreaToon to become more cooperative and competitive animators in the ever more global and competitive animation world. For small SMEs, such as the Cut-Out Animation Co and Animante, it now becomes more feasible (utilizing the networked collaboration tools, the asset management tools and more extensive re-use of assets) to take initiatives towards larger productions such as animation series productions. They will also be in a far better position to undertake jointly ¿ either partners or one of the partners with another production company ¿ series or animations.
