Method for the advanced design approach for personalised training and interactive tools

The ADAPT Method is an Instructional Systems Development (ISD) Method dedicated to the 4C/ID model. The 4C/ID model is described as a separate result, owned by OUNL, but it is a public document and fully usable to the consortium and others. As such partners will refer to using the Method as part of their exploitation plans, with reference to the 4C/ID model as well.

Next to the analysis and design steps of 4C/ID and the resulting training blueprint, the ADAPT Method describes the activities related to project definition and needs assessment, before the 4C/ID steps are taken. This includes tasks as management and planning, analysing the target population, and understanding the constraints on the project. Development of training materials and implementation of training are not covered by the ADAPT Method. The evaluation process is part of the ADAPT Method again. A review on evaluation is provided and a practical ADAPT evaluation is described to cover three of the four levels of Kirkpatrick: reaction, learning and behaviour, where on the learning level, specific assessment may be required during the implementation of training for the personalised training aspects of the ADAPT Method.

The 4C/ID model that was developed by Van Merrienboer (1997), constitutes the basis of the ADAPT Method. The 4C/ID model provides a systematic approach to the analysis and the design of training programmes for complex cognitive skills. The application of the approach results in the description of a training design blueprint that can be used by instructional designers to design effective and efficient training. The model focuses on the integration and coordinated performance of task-specific constituent skills, it makes a critical distinction between supportive information and required just-in-time information, and it recommends whole task learning.

The basic message of the 4C/ID-model is that environments for complex learning can always be described in terms of four interrelated blueprint components, namely, learning tasks, supportive information, just-in-time information, and part-task practice.

The 4C/ID model will be further developed on the basis of studies carried out to investigate in greater detail important aspects, such as the timing of information presentation, modalities of information presentation, and optimal step sizes in process worksheets for learning tasks.

The model is described in a public document and fully usable to the consortium and others. In addition, all further developments of the model will be described in public documents. In 2004 a new more 'practice-oriented' description of the model will appear in bookform.
