ADAPT-IT Report Summary

Project ID: IST-1999-11740
Funded under: FP5-IST
Country: Netherlands

Dissemination of the advanced design approach for personalised training and interactive tools

ADAPT-IT offers a powerful training design tool, based on the renowned Four Component Instructional Design Model by Jeroen van Merrienboer. His book with the same name was a bestseller in the training design community. Now the method has been translated in a powerful tool that supports the design of training for complex cognitive skills.

ADAPT-IT offers training designers a powerful tool, which:
- Supports the design of more effective training programmes for complex cognitive skills through a practice oriented training approach that maximises student performance and optimises mental effort;

- Increases the efficiency of the training design process by version control, standardisation, reuse of existing training designs and enhanced communication within the training design and development team.

The Advanced Design Approach for Personalised Training, Interactive Tools (ADAPT-IT) -project's dissemination results consisted of various activities, including:
- Public deliverables - The following deliverables are public: D2.3 Literature review, D5.7 Evaluation report, D6.4 Validation report, D8.6 Standards compliance, D9.2 Training designers final report, D9.3 Educational scientists final report, D9.6 ADAPT-IT PR materials and media

- Symposium and workshop - On the 3rd and 4th June 2003 a concluding symposium and workshop were organised at EUROCONTROL/IANS in Luxembourg to present the outcomes of the ADAPT-IT project to the European user community. The workshop consisted of a half - day symposium introducing the background of the project, including the underlying Four Component Instructional Design Model. The other one and a half days were spent on a workshop that provided the participants with the opportunity to actually work with the ADAPTIT method and the tool.

The invited potential users came from different EU Member States and different domains and reflected an updated list of potential users. The majority of the symposium participants came from the Netherlands and the Air Traffic Control domain, which can be explained by the background of the consortium partners.

- Journal article - De Croock, M.B.M., Paas, F.G.W.C., Schlanbusch, H., & van Merrienboer, J.J.G. (2002). ADAPT-IT: Instructional Design (ID) tools for training design and evaluation. Educational Technology, Research and Development, 50(4), 47-58.

- The ADAPT-IT flyer - A flyer was written to present the background of the project, its purpose, the consortium and an overview of the unique selling points of the method and the tool.

- The ADAPT-IT website - The official project website can be found at http://www.adaptit.org. This site provides information on the project, the consortium, and the method and the tool.

- ADAPT-IT on the PROACTe website - Information on ADAPT-IT can also be found on the PROACTE website. On the site, information can be found on EU projects in educational technologies in an interactive way.

- ADAPT-IT on the CORDIS website (FACT SHEET) - From the start of the project, there has been ADAPT-IT information available on the CORDIS web-site, which provides Community information for and about R&D projects.

- Presentations - The individual partners have presented to tools within their organisation and to (potential) clients.

In the future, demonstrations of ADAPT-IT will be given at workshops, such as the one at IANS in Luxembourg in June 2003. Furthermore, the tools will be promoted at conferences and seminars, in which different partners will participate, such as ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organisation) global and regional training conferences. The tool will also be presented at informal meetings with representatives from other organisations, and another article will be written about the validation of the method in practice, covering the WP5 and WP6 activities.
