Effect of anti-oxidant treatments

We used anti-oxidant treatment (acetylcysteine, DMSO) on control and infected cell cultures. We observed that the treatment significantly reduced the alpha cleavage of PrP suggesting that this cleavage is dependant of oxidative stress (see also report from N Hooper). On infected cells we could rescue the higher death rate of the cells suggesting as in many neurodegenerative disorder that anti-oxidant treatments might be of interest.
