Training of teachers in DUNES-related (or other argumentation-based) teaching activities

A product of the constructivist approach, DUNES sees the individual, the interactions with his/her peers and the deep engagement in his/her activities (through appropriate tasks and tools) as central factors for learning. DUNES promotes learning by building on argumentative discussions as the learning engine, assigning to the collective generation of their graphical representation a crucial role in the process.

Introducing the DUNES system in the actual curricula depends, among other things, on our ability to train teachers / moderators in the tasks associated with the conduction of DUNES-based discussions. Indeed, the argumentative foundations of DUNES approach entail a different role of the teacher in the learning activity, and this new role should be supported by a proper preparation of the teacher. To this aim, we have devised and started to implement in schools teachers training sessions in cycles of 28 or 56 hours, for groups of up to 20 teachers each. These training cycles build on the vast experience gathered by our group in the project and in parallel activities realized during the last years. The following are basic components of the training program:
- The use of ontologies
- Case design
- Alternative approaches to discussion moderation
- Discussion evaluation
- Reflection-inducing activities
- Etc.
