Theory and practice of IPv4-IPv6 transitioning for campus/enterprise networks

As IPv6 grows in maturity in terms of standards and implementations, and as the understanding of its benefits grow, deployments, both pilot and production, will also increase in number. A major focus of the activity in Work Package 2 of 6NET was to validate IPv6 deployment for University (Campus)networks.

As site networks are made dual-stack, and IPv6 services enabled, IPv6-only nodes can be deployed into these environments, with a longer-term view to support and operate
IPv6-only networks.

In addition to supporting dual-stack networking on their own Campus, many universities also offer IPv6 access methods for their users, e.g. using a tunnel broker or a 6to4 relay.

The transition period is likely to be long, but early experience especially in an academic setting where teaching, innovation and research come to the forefront is highly recommended.

The overwhelming experience from 6NET is that you can transition towards dual-stack networking successfully without adversely impacting your existing IPv4 infrastructure.
