Structuring the ERA for aquaculture and fisheries

The principal outputs have been:

- To create EFARO (European Fisheries and Aquaculture Research Organisations) as an efficient structure of coordination of the Directors of research Institutes in EU, Norway and Iceland. Through its web site( ), a leaflet and its different reports, it has been recognize as a partner by the scientific community, DG “Fish”, DG “Research”, DG “Environment”, others institutions (ESF, EAFE,&) as well as policy makers at the national and EU levels, including the EU parliament.

- To facilitate technical exchanges through thematic workshops which produced reports and recommendations on various issues

- To increase efficiency of research in relation with the request from managers and stakeholders.

- To increase scientific cooperation with other disciplines through institution like the Marine Board from the European Science Foundation, and the economists of the European Aquaculture and Fisheries Economists, to face towards the challenge of multidisciplinarity which will be a key success to contribute to the CFP.

- To contribute to increase institutional cooperation:
--Among EFARO Institutes: 21 research contracts under the Scientific Support to Policy of the 6th Framework Program (FP6) included EFARO Institutes, of which 13 are coordinated by one EFARO member.
--With other institutes through 4 Integrated Projects or Network of Excellence from the priority 5 and 6 in FP6.
--With the science managers through EFARO participation as an expert group in MarinERA to coordinate national research programmes, by taking the initiative of MARIFISH, an ERA-net dedicated to coordinate fisheries research, and by playing a strong role in this project.

- To increase dialogue between research Institutes and EC DG “Fish” through 3 annual statuary meetings where:
-- Data collections programs for biology and economy has been adapted,
-- Recommendations of the working groups have been approved by the Directors and utilised in some E.U. calls,
-- Evaluation of the nature and the quality of research to answer specific questions has been addressed for middle term or long-term tendencies.

A prospective document for FP7 has been produced.
