Lithium battery evaluation and research - accelerated life test direction

Deliverables

Life cycling tests following EUCAR test procedures for High Power and High Energy Lithium batteries. Description of test procedures and determination of lithium battery characteristics (Internal Resistances, Open Circuit Voltage, different Peak Powers. Impacts of main parameters on battery life.
Test procedures for the accelerated lifetime testing of lithium batteries. The procedures are aimed at providing a 10-year prediction of cell lifetime with the test duration of 6 months. This will provide industry with the capability to make informed judgements on the lifetime capability of a system at an early stage of the design process.
Within this project, systematic ageing tests, measurements of impedance during the ageing tests and an analysis of the major ageing effects and processes in lithium batteries have been performed. Based on these activities it was possible to understand better the impedance spectra and to correlate them with ageing processes inside the batteries. Therefore it is now possible to use the impedance spectroscopy as an important tool to develop and analyse lithium batteries with regard to ageing.
Literature study and database: A literature study on ageing mechanisms in lithium-ion batteries has been performed in open databases. The search results were evaluated and summarized in a report. A review paper based on this report was published. The relevant results of the literature search were compiled in a literature database for easy access.
