Final Activity Report Summary - P-DIAGENEX (Pathways for Phosphorus (and Nitrogen) Release from Sediments of ... Eutrophic Ecosystems: Diagenesis Experiments and Modelling)

Eutrophication can lead to the production of harmful algal blooms and is one of the world’s most serious water quality issues. Phosphorus is potentially the limiting macro-nutrient in fresh, estuarine and some marine waters. Consequently, it plays a crucial role in determining the ecological status of many aquatic ecosystems.

Considerable effort was invested in monitoring dissolved reactive phosphorus and total phosphorus in the water column; however is known about phosphorus and its speciation in the sediment. This compartment is an important and dynamic reservoir of phosphorus and a potential source of phosphorus release to the water column from the sediment-water interface.

This research helped to better characterise the influence of the sediment on the storage and recycling of phosphorus in aquatic ecosystems, such as estuaries and shallow lakes. By investigating solid-phase speciation, reorganisation of phosphorus within the sediments as well as potential release of bio-available phosphorus from the organic matter, this research was able to provide qualitative and quantitative assessment of the potential impact of labile and reactive phosphorus species on aquatic ecosystems.
