Final Activity Report Summary - CHEMBIOCAM (Chemical Biology at Cambridge - ChemBioCam)

The chemistry and biology interface proved to be one of the most dynamically developing areas of science and this programme provided essential training for young researchers in this exciting field.

Biological chemistry underpins the development of the European pharmaceutical, biotechnology and agrochemical industries. The comprehensive training programme of CHEMBIOCAM brought together leading groups with diverse and complementary skills in structural biology, such as Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and X-ray), molecular recognition, synthetic chemistry, manipulation of biosynthetic mechanisms, enzymology, mechanistic organic chemistry or protein science, which all aimed at understanding and manipulating the molecular machines that nature evolved.

The training programme benefited from existing interdisciplinary structures within the University and enhanced and developed them innovatively, therefore creating a model for future education in this area. In addition, there was significant emphasis on developing entrepreneurial awareness, including formal teaching on commercial issues and interaction with Small and medium enterprises (SMEs). The demand for trained personnel was never higher, and this programme selected, supported and educated seven truly outstanding alumni of whom we were all proud of.
