Final Activity Report Summary - SELFORGNANODEVICES (Self-organised nanoscale devices)

Oxides of manganese, known as the manganites, are crystalline materials in which it is possible to create magnetic and electronic patterns at the nanoscale. These patterns inspire dreams of nanoscale circuits, therefore understanding and controlling them is important. One can imagine metallic pathways threading through an insulator, all in the same material.

The main result from the fellowship concerned a detailed look at such an insulator. It was originally thought that the electrons were localised on alternate atomic planes, but the obtained results showed that this could not be the case even in the most extremely insulating manganite compositions. A transmission electron microscope revealed that the electrons were in fact smeared out. Surprisingly, this smearing was found to occur along more than one direction. The nanoscale variation in orientational was linked to the magnetism in the material, demonstrating what a complex system this was. The research also revealed the smearing in thin films; however the strain in the films prevented the orientational variations. This demonstrated a means of controlling the electronic properties.
