Final Activity Report Summary - PHASEORHIZ (Nitrogen symblotic fixation inthe genetic diversity of common bean)

The common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) is traditionally grown by farmers in Galicia, Spain during the warm season. Common bean is often grown in marginal lands with limitation in available soil N, and with minimal fertilisation. This crop is often considered as a poor N2 fixing legume which explains its cultivation with a complement of mineral nitrogenous fertilisation.

The objective of this project was to increase the competitiveness of common bean by improving nitrogen fixation capacity, and therefore, enhancing yield in low fertility soils. Moreover, in this purpose inoculant strains for reference areas were selected. If so, the inoculation of common bean with efficient rhizobial strains may be the mean to improve biological nitrogen fixation and common bean productivity.
