Final Report Summary - ANSWER (Artificial nanomaterials for short wavelength emission in the infrared)

The ANSWER project aimed to develop a new class of materials for Quantum cascade lasers (QCLs). Materials characterised by strong electronic confinement would be explored in order to cover the growing need for compact solid state laser sources in the wavelength range of three to five micrometres as semiconductor lasers exhibit a gap in this particular wavelength region. Specifically, the objective of the project was to develop various material platforms that had not been previously exploited in order to produce a Continuous wave (CW) double-channel QCL operating under modest Peltier cooling at a wavelength shorter than five micrometres.

QCLs constitute the proper choice for achieving short wavelength emission as they turn out to be small, compact as well as robust. Compact, sensitive and rapid detection systems could be envisaged with proper laser sources which systems would apply for detection of hazardous substances and explosives in homeland security in airports, metro systems as well as points of mass transit or gathering.
