Final Report Summary - SILVERCROSS (Mass production of silver halide recording material for full colour holographic applications)

The SILVERCROSS project was established to solve the problem associated with the lack of suitable materials on the market that could be used for recording high quality full-colour holograms or holographic optical elements (HOEs).

A commercial product would allow the evolution of a completely new industry, with a potential market size of several billion euros and could create up to 10 000 European jobs. The spheres of impact include security, 2-dimensional display systems, cultural heritage, art and portraiture, advertising and in the future 3-dimensional holographic dynamic imaging systems.

The SILVERCROSS project has worked to:
- Develop and verify nanoparticle (5 - 10 nm) panchromatic, isochromatic silver halide emulsions with high sensitivity.
- Identify a process of coating these emulsions onto glass plates.
- Verify the performance and storage characteristics of this recording material.
- Develop a prototype manufacturing apparatus and process for this recording material.

SILVERCROSS aimed to develop a process and prototype apparatus suitable for mass-manufacture of super-resolution silver halide emulsion-coated plates capable of making full-colour holographic recordings. The project delivered radical breakthroughs in the following areas:

Emulsion preparation
A large volume of work was performed by contractors NEWI, LIÈGE, CLOSPI and STOJANOFF to synthesise a number of novel silver halide emulsion. Several emulsions were tested, based on technology developed at the three RTD performers.

Grain preparation
A process for obtaining a silver halide emulsion with uniform nanoparticle size (5 - 10 nm) was devised. The emulsions were stable at up to a year if stored at -20 degrees Celsius.

Emulsion sensitization
This nanoparticle emulsion was sensitised to provide a material that was both panchromatic and isochromatic without a serious reciprocity failure problem and a sensitivity of <2.0 mJ cm-2.

Full-colour reproduction
The SILVERCROSS emulsion developed gave excellent reproduction of colours when reflection holograms were recorded using a five laser setup.

Manufacture
A prototype mass-production technique for uniformly coating large glass plates or film with this emulsion was developed.

An entire work package was devoted to dissemination of results and exploitation of the new knowledge. The primary mode of dissemination was the project's web site, which allowed easy access to the project's reports and documentation. The website also provided educational materials, for both the general public and the scientific community.

Representatives from key stakeholders were invited to attend the technology transfer workshops, held in months 19 and 25. The main market identified was the museums and art gallery sector, where SILVERCROSS was providing a valuable tool for the preservation of cultural heritage.

The main exploitable results were the following:
- Ultra-fine silver halide emulsions. These emulsions are used for coating onto glass plates, onto which colour holograms can then be recorded.
- Manufacture of large-scale plate-coating equipment. This equipment, partially developed during this project, is used for coating the emulsions onto large glass plates (up to 30 cm × 40 cm).
- Large format holographic plates. These plates were used to record full-colour demonstration holograms, to prove the commercial viability of the SILVERCROSS technology.
