DEsign, SYnthesis and Growth of Nanotubes for Industrial Technology

Final Report Summary - DESYGN-IT (Design, synthesis and growth of nanotubes for industrial technology)

The primary scientific and technical objective of the DESYGN-IT project was to establish Europe as the international scientific leader in the design, synthesis as well as growth of nanotubes, nanowires and nanotube arrays.

The scientific objectives of the work consisted in:
- creating the know-how and encourage European industry to first enter the market with a cost-effective mass production of high quality nanotubes;
- corresponding to the demands of industry for low cost, high purity nanotubes and related products as well as increase high-tech exports;
- showing to the European industry the nanotubes' enhanced performance in applications and the cost benefits as well as providing the industry with a practical understanding of the capabilities of nanosize materials;
- increasing the number of publications and patents in the nanotube and nanowire field.

The technical objectives of the project consisted in:
- developing a low cost, clean process in order to produce high quality nanotubes;
- manufacturing nanotubes with certain electronic and mechanical properties;
- forming nanotubes in such a way that could be easily handled by industry;
- synthesising and characterising semiconductor and ferromagnetic nanowires;
- developing nanotube industrial prototypes for use in sensor devices and Scanning probe microscopy (SPM) tips.

The project achieved several accomplishments in terms of the large-scale synthesis of high quality and high purity nanotubes, the controlled growth and characterisation of nanowires and nanoarrays, the development and test of nanotube actuators and nanotube reinforced polymer composites which are all stated in the deliverables.
