Final Report Summary - PERCERAMICS (Multifunctional percolated nanostructured ceramics fabricated from hydroxylapatite)

The project included the development of percolated nanostructured electrically polarised ceramics fabricated from hydroxyapatite (HAP) to prepare bone eligible bioimplants, and to be in use as a platform to manufacture biologically active compounds and significantly improve technologies on purification of environment.

The project results improved quality of bioimplants due to novel:
1. wettability engineering of the implant surface and electrical charge deposition on it;
2. nanostructured hydroxyapatite based ceramics.

The project results gave the possibility to obtain stable immobilised microbial systems on PERCERAMICS and other carriers which were not suitable for the immobilisation of microorganisms.

The project results improved the quality of the technologies for protection and purification of the environment, and fabrication of food products and biologically active substances.

The project results extended knowledge on physiology of microorganisms and anhydrobiosis of microorganisms.

The project results provide the following impacts to industry:
1. novel approaches to fabricate bioimplants having the enhanced quality;
2. wettability engineering and electrical charge deposition approaches to control quality of the substrates;
3. approaches to fabricate nanostructured hydroxyapatite-based ceramics; 4.
novel improved approaches for fabrication of food products and biologically active substances; 5.
novel improved approaches for protection and purification of the environment.

The project results provided the following impacts to research:
1. novel algorithms on computational models for cells' adhering and elastic properties;
2. improved technology to fabricate nanoparticles (nanopowders) of HAP;
3. methods to deposit electrical charge to the ceramics surface;
4. methods on surface wettability engineering;
5. new knowledge on physical and bioproperties of HAP nanoparticles;
6. new knowledge on physical and bioproperties of nanostructured HAP ceramics (PERCERAMICS);
7. new knowledge on novel PERCERAMICS based bioimplant prototype properties;
8. new method for the immobilisation of microorganisms;
9. new method for the determination of the viability of microorganisms including immobilised microorganisms;
10. new knowledge on physiology of microorganisms;
11. new approaches for the investigation of anhydrobiosis of microorganisms.
