Final Report Summary - EUMERCOPOL (Analysis of the competitiveness of Mercosur?s key agri-food sectors, comparison of policies and the ex-ante impacts of EU-Mercosur trade liberalisation)

Europe is the most important economic trading partner of the Mercosur region countries - Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay, Chile and Bolivia - with the agri-food sector playing the most significant part. Growing liberalisation will have a considerable effect on this international trade, because Europe and Mercosur are in direct competition over some crops. Partners need to find out as much as they can about the impact of the change in relation to existing food production and trade policies.

In the EUMERCOPOL project, scientists from Mercosur and European countries collected data on crop production, and growth and trade potential in these countries using the same methodology. They also analysed the ex-ante impact of liberalised trade in agricultural products between the two regions, focusing on budgets, markets and key indicators. The results show how trade in agricultural products between the two regions could be enhanced.
