Final Activity Report Summary - SPORT (Signal processing for optical recording technologies)

The first fellow initiated a systematic performance analysis of a low density parity check (LDPC) error correction scheme coupled to soft decodable runlength limited (RLL) codes in Bliss scheme-based optical storage systems, under various runlength constraints, i.e. d-constraints. A simulator environment was developed that enabled to simulate the optical channel at conditions that applied for the practical case of near-field optical recording. The simulator was used in the discussion on the fourth generation of high density optical recording.

The second fellow studied the influence of flow through a microarray on the hybridisation reaction rate in deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) hybridisation. A kinetic analysis was performed using a mathematical model with various thermodynamic settings such as melting curves, coupled to experimental data. The research performed by the Marie Curie fellow strongly improved our understanding of the hybridisation process. The thermo dynamical model that was developed provided criteria for hybridisation system optimisation for such devices.

The third fellow contributed to developing a reference gas sensing platform for the evaluation of the exhaled breath background gas composition, i.e. to significantly increase the specificity of the electronic nose sensor. The fellow developed a pressure controlled, humidity controlled and versatile air chamber that enabled fully automated calibration of the implemented sensor. The Marie Curie fellow set up the foundations for the theoretical underlying model and performed the first measurements with this reference sensor, which motivated further research after the project completion.
