Deterministic and integrated processes for fabricating freeform optics by means of computer-controlled optical surfacing

Final Activity Report Summary - FREEFORMING OPTICS (Deterministic and integrated processes for fabricating freeform optics by means of computer-controlled optical surfacing)

During the whole project, the fellow, Mr Gabbia has reached following milestones (in cooperation with colleagues):
- He programmed with Matlab a new code for the generation of CNC-file for ultra precision machine of hi-quality optical free form surface. The program has been used for the production of moulds and control of machines inside Carl Zeiss group.
- He screened and implemented a new software solution for the generation of CNC-file for ultra-precision production. The software solution has been used for the production of new optical systems using free form surfaces and has been integrated in the development of new competences for manufacturing free form surfaces (description, construction, production, measurement ...) at Carl Zeiss.
- He learned how to operate an ultra-precision machine (Precitech 703XG, diamond turning, diamond milling) for testing and production of free form surfaces (performance achieved on aluminium sample: about 2 nm Ra (roughness) and less than 1 nm (form deviation)).
