Final Activity Report Summary - INNOTECHTEX (High functional and innovative textiles and processes for technical applications)

The overall objective of this proposal was to increase the knowledge and research level of the host organisation on innovative technical textiles beginning from fibre to the end product for various applications. The host organisation is a good background of experience in textile education, training and research activities. Through this project it was aimed at to gain more competence worldwide by increasing the knowledge and research level on innovative technical textiles.

As it is known, there is large textile and apparel industry in Turkey as a candidate country for European Union (EU). Turkey is also the main provider of textile and apparel products to various European countries and has also very important place in the world textile production and trade. Ege university and in general Turkey, have a great experience in production of every kind of textiles. In addition to this successfull background in production and development of classical textiles, the knowledge gaining on innovative and technical textiles will force up the development of new research and production areas. As a result the high tech level of Europa will spread up by a new and powerfull potential.

The activities coordinated under this mobility programme have advanced the knowledge level of host organisation and created a useful bridge with the partners which are:
1. Ghent University, Textile Engineering Department in Belgium
2. Stuttgart University, Institute for Textile Chemistry and Chemical Fibres in Germany.
These two institutions are well known all over the world and they have a great experience in the field of technical textiles.

Within this project the following sections for transfer of knowledge have been taken into consideration:
- transfer of knowledge on fibres which are used in technical textiles applications;
- transfer of knowledge on technical woven fabrics;
- transfer of knowledge on technical nonwovens;
- transfer of knowledge on finishing technologies for technical textiles, and their ecological aspects.

The host organisation has a good team having large training and research experiment. For this reason, the project on transfer of knowledge for innovative technical textiles will significantly increase the host's research quality and overall RTD capability and competitiveness. Because 'technical textiles' is a new a area in Turkey and has a big growing capacity, the host will take the advantage of having such a possibility of knowledge transfer in very important areas of innovative technical textiles.

The main targets of transfer of knowledge activities are further improve the knowledge base of technical woven, knitted and nonwoven structures, fibres for technical uses, finishing aspects of technical structures and ecological friendliness of these finishing technologies for taking care of world environment. These targets have been realised by means of incoming and outgoing researchers due to a certain planning. The expected main result was to improve the qualification of host institute to further contribute the European textile industry in terms of innovation and competitiveness.

Since this project was a MC TOK development scheme project there was an initial phase in which the host recruited experienced 'incoming researchers' for acquisition of new knowledge according to the Marie curie actions work programme (edition July 2003). Thereafter the host organisation sent its experienced researchers to the project partners which are Ghent University in Belgium and Stuttgart University in Germany as the 'outgoing researchers'. By means of these secondments, the host institute had more possibility to transfer new knowledge on technical textiles and thus the research ability of the staff improved themselves further.
