Final Activity Report Summary - HYSAFEST (EST in fundamentals of hydrogen safety)

The HySAFEST project offered an opportunity for researchers in the early stage of their careers to work in an internationally recognised research team at the Hydrogen Safety Engineering and Research (HySAFER) Centre of the University of Ulster, pursuing wide national and international research collaboration strategy. The project aimed to enable trainees to handle diverse and outstanding problems of hydrogen safety.

Research training included:

1. doctoral studies in the most challenging areas of hydrogen safety, identified by the leading European hydrogen safety experts in the course of the European Community's funded network of excellence (NOE) project titled 'Safety of hydrogen as an energy career' (HYSAFE), www.hysafe.org. Moreover, the fellows covered particular phenomena contributing to major hazards associated with the use of hydrogen and development of hydrogen safety engineering as a discipline, i.e. 'Mechanisms of hydrogen ignition and fires', 'Formation and combustion of non uniform hydrogen-air mixtures', 'Hydrogen deflagration-to-detonation transition and its mitigation technologies', 'Principles of hydrogen safety engineering'.
2. contribution to the research project NoE 'HYSAFE' and the European Community's funded specifically targeted research project 'Installation permitting guidance for hydrogen and fuel cell stationary applications" (HYPER), http://www.hyperproject.eu/.
3. participation and reporting at the European summer schools on hydrogen safety, organised by the Marie Curies Action project HyCourse, http://www.hysafe.org/science/eAcademy/php/hycourse.php . Four such schools were attended by trainees during the HySAFEST project.
4. participation and reporting at the short course and advanced research workshop series 'Progress in hydrogen safety', http://hysafer.ulster.ac.uk/phs/, with nine workshops being attended by trainees during the HySAFEST project.
5. graduation from the world's first postgraduate course in the field, i.e. MSc in Hydrogen Safety Engineering, http://prospectus.ulster.ac.uk/course/?id=7761, with all four trainees being graduated from this unique programme.
6. involvement into teaching and supervision of students at the University of Ulster.
7. networking activities with leading national and international experts in the field representing academia, research centres, regulatory bodies and industrial companies carrying out research in the area of hydrogen safety, including Health and Safety Laboratory, United Kingdom, Building Research Establishment, United Kingdom, European Commission Joint Research Centre, the Netherlands, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Germany, Fraunhofer Institute for Chemical Technologies, Germany, Commissariat à l' Energie Atomique et aux Energies Alternatives, France, Institut National de l' Environnement Industriel et des Risques (INERIS), France, Volvo, Sweden, BMW, Germany, Air Liquide, France, DNV, Norway, Sandia National Laboratory, United States of America, Department of Energy, United States of America, Kurchatov Institute, Russia, and many others.
8. publication of research results in peer-reviewed journals, including 15 journal publications.
9. participation and presentations at scientific conferences, including 29 publications, attendance of seminars, workshops and meetings related to the area of research and training, e.g. meetings of the United Kingdom Explosion Liaison Group, http://ukelg.ps.ic.ac.uk/, Fire and Blast Information Group, http://www.fabig.com/, OpenFOAM workshop, http://www.openfoamworkshop.org, meetings of the European research projects NoE 'HySafe', and STREP 'HyPER. During the project lifetime all four trainees successfully completed their PhD studies and the PhD degree was conferred by the University of Ulster within 36 months of employment. In accordance with the project success indicators, three early stage researchers (ESRs) were already employed in the field of hydrogen safety science and engineering and the fourth had just applied for a position in the field by the time of the project completion.
