Final Activity Report Summary - CNTCOMP (High Volume Fraction Nanocomposites Incorporating Modified Carbon Nanotube Reinforcements)

In this proposal, the development of novel nanostructured carbon nanotube - based composites that have uniform nanotube dispersion, good interfacial bonding and experience high CNT loading was studied. The programme of work spanned from nanotube surface-modification to make it more compatible to polymer matrices to measurements of mechanical properties of finished products. We applied a different method for nanocomposite fabrication utilising non-polluting close mould "dry pre-forms" concepts that present currently the only available method to produce high volume fraction CNT/ epoxy resin nanocomposites. Modelling of the mechanical behaviour of both the CNT/ epoxy composites as well as of embedded graphene flakes was performed.

An extensive programme of mobility for acquiring the necessary training in order to achieve the programme aims took place with a success. Programme of work included research in newly discovered graphene and a fruitful collaboration with the 2010 Nobel Prize Laureates in Physics has been established. Research work in CNTCOMP opened new research routes in the production and characterisation of novel composites based on CNT and graphene. In particular, the work on graphene is envisaged to attract strong research interest in the near future for a diverse of applications from strong and light weighted nanocomposites to photonics and biotechnology.
