Final Activity Report Summary - CREATE (ECO) (Creating a competitive ERA through empowerment of the young researchers - integrating multidisciplinary aspects of research management and innovation)

The CREATE (ECO) series of events consisted of four training courses over a period of four years. The coordinator was SINTEF, with VITO, EIDON and Fraunhofer as partners, while VTT and TNO were part of the consortium. The goal of this series was to strengthen young and inexperienced researchers' competencies in research management on a European level, through training courses led by senior researchers tied to innovation and creativity, internal communication and public dissemination, knowledge and technology transfer and human resource management. In the first course focus was on gaining new insights on the relation between innovation and research in a global context, with a view on creativity as something that can be learned.

The second course focused on within-project communication and on public dissemination and presentation techniques. The third training course was on the necessity for and the complexity of knowledge and technology transfer. The fourth training course focused on the human factors in teams - the importance of high quality human resource management. The trainings contributed to increased awareness of the quality of work processes in multidisciplinary project settings, through lectures, field reports, group work and practical trainings. One of the main strengths of these training courses was the diversity of contributors, ranging from company directors to independent counselling experts, researchers and research managers, and not least chaos pilots.

Another crucial factor of success has been the multitude of training tools - highly appreciated by the participants as it made it possible to enlighten the topics of interest from different angles and perspectives. The feedback from the participants has been very positive and progressively better after each event; many expressing that this knowledge has been crucial for them in understanding how to drastically ameliorate their research and project work, and that they learned valuable techniques and gained new understandings regarding establishing successful interactions. Not least the focus on different perspectives helped many participants to - perhaps for the first time - look beyond their own field of research and appreciate the suggestions and results stemming from team-members with different methodological approaches when considering solutions to general or specific problems.

Finally, all events put strong weight on the networking aspects of the training courses, organising breaks and free time in a manner that encouraged as much interaction between the participants on a social basis. Social time often started with certain "break-the-ice" exercises and games in order to facilitate communication. It was also given suggestions to social activities for the participants' free time, with initial organisation from the part of the event organisers to set them off. This was highly appreciated. Also, a photobook was printed for each event, with pictures, academic interests and contact information of all participants in order to facilitate further communication and hopefully cooperation.

The materialisation of the project has been the result of extensive team work including all organisations in the consortium as well as CREATE participants. The bonds between the organisations in the consortium have been extremely tight, with much formal as well as informal communication. The planning of each event has gone through a variety of stages with regard to location, logistics and content, where the host organisation has been heavily assisted and supported by the consortium, and by the coordinator in particular. This way to operationalise the project ensured the continuous participation, contribution and cooperation from and between all partners and consortium, and we all feel that we have learned and grown enormously during these four years. New project ideas are already up and running in order for us to be able to continue our fruitful cooperation.
