Final Activity Report Summary - CITYNET (Development of an integrated urban management tool)

The CITYNET project aimed to develop an Urban Energy Management Tool to support the transition to sustainable energy use in urban areas. 3D urban models are a useful source of information for city wide simulation and analysis. Relatively complex urban models (semantic + attributes) can be used as a large data basis that is already existent in many cities. The important task was to transform these models into a format that can be used by simulation tools. The Urban Energy Management Tool shows examples where this integration/transformation was successful and allowed the simulation tool to use the 3D model as a data source. The web based urban management tool integrates the work of the fellows. It includes results from building simulation studies (fellow Korolija from de Montfort University), urban density investigations on day-lighting and energy performance (fellows Kesten and Tereci from Stuttgart University of Applied Sciences), solar cooling results (fellow Labus and Burgos from Tarragona University), office building performance (fellow Schulze from Istanbul Technical University) and hybrid energy system optimisation (fellow Bayraktar from Politecnico di Torino). In addition it allows access to online monitoring results for fault detection and simulation based optimisation of photovoltaic systems (fellow Duminil from Stuttgart University of Applied Sciences and di Vicenzo from Strathclyde University) and data transfer from 3D city geometries to simulation models (fellow Bogdahn from Strathclyde University and Stuart from Politecnico di Torino).

Within the CITNYET project, 8 training modules were designed and successfully carried out in urban energy management (list of CITYNET workshop programs is attached). In addition, the CITYNET fellows organised a large public workshop on urban energy management in Stuttgart 2010, which was directly connected to an international Conference on sustainable cities. Furthermore, an international workshop was organised and carried out jointly by the fellows at the 2010 International Conference on Indoor Air Quality and Ventilation in Syracuse/USA.

The CITYNET fellows presented their work on many national and international conferences and some peer reviewed journals. In addition, the hosting of fellows not just within the CITYNET partner network, but also in other European research laboratories, opened new contacts and future career options for the fellows. Close contact to industry and municipalities was enabled within different secondments, for example with energy supply companies or urban energy management departments of city municipalities. An important network for all fellows was the CONCERTO initiative of the European Commission within the 6th framework program. Here 58 European communities implemented renewable energy and building efficiency projects in urban neighbourhoods.

The project POLYCITY with 18 participants from Spain, Italy, Germany and Poland served as a direct data base for validation of all developed simulation tools. Media coverage of the CITYNET project was excellent: Contacts to the Euronews television channel were established in period 3, which resulted in a special FUTURIS edition of the science channel about the CITYNET project. The EURONEWS documentary on sustainable urban energy management exclusively covered the CITYNET activities with locations in Stuttgart and Istanbul. The documentary was shown within all EURONEWS channels and distributed worldwide (China, India and others).
