Final Activity Report Summary - ECERTA (Enabling Certification by Analysis)

The use of simulation to assist the aeroelastic certification of aircraft was considered in this project. Advances in the simulation methods were achieved in several areas, namely to allow the search of the flight envelope for instability using nonlinear large dimension models whilst considering the impact of structural parameter uncertainties. The computational framework developed uses computational fluid dynamics to predict the aerodynamics. This means that the models are of very high dimension.

A constrained eigenvalue solver is used to allow particular eigenvalues of the system that are critical for aeroelastic stability to be calculated in a timescale consistent with industrial requirements. The method allows for many solutions to be calculated for multiple structural realisations when the definition of the structural model is uncertain. Monte Carlo and interval calculations are possible. An energy method for the identification of structural damping was developed and demonstrated on test data generated during the project. A variety of structural tests were carried out to generate data for the validation of methods to describe structural model uncertainty. The methods involved stochastic model updating and interval model updating. A final demonstration of the aeroelastic stability prediction was made for an aircraft development model provided by Airbus.
