Final Activity Report Summary - GAMIDI (Transfer of knowledge required to understand cross-talk between host and pathogen during gastrointestinal infections in humans)

The main objective of this project was to transfer knowledge and high-level expertise to build a world-class research capability at the National University of Ireland (NUI), Galway for molecular studies on the interactions that occur between the human host and gastrointestinal pathogens. Importantly, not only has efficient skills and technology transfer occurred but new insights into host-bacterial interactions in the human gut, that are central to the pathogenesis of significant and emerging gastrointestinal infections, has been achieved.

The successful transfer of skills and molecular technologies has allowed an integration of analysis of host and bacterial responses during the infection process. The acquisition of the multidisciplinary approaches in cell biology, molecular biology, transcriptomics, proteomics and bioinformatics has increased the national and international impact of the research cluster and has acted as a catalyst for developing new international scientific and industrial collaborations from a variety of funding agencies.
