Final Activity Report Summary - FIST (Finite Structures)

During the project, Renyi Institute hosted experienced researchers for 72 months, and the fellows of Renyi Institute spent 26 month at the partner universities. The expertise of these experienced researchers was very stimulating. The success of the project was guaranteed by their exceptional knowledge. The main goal of the project was to cooperate with leading experts in different fields of discrete mathematics. It involves two different things, which are very much related to each other: on one hand, to achieve joint results, to prove nice theorems, to discover interesting phenomena in different combinatorial structures even if they are not joint results but as a result of the fruitful discussions, on the other hand, to have experts of discrete mathematics at Renyi Institute mostly from Europe, but from all around the world too, and to learn from them the most recent methods, the state-of-art results in their special area.

The most important output of the project are its publication, even if the publications come sometimes just somewhat after the visits. It is clear that many further publications will be produced later and that sometimes the relation of the lectures and discussions to the forthcoming papers is less measurable. Counting just the discrete mathematics papers done by our incoming or outgoing visitors during their stay, the number of scientific publications in the project is 73. A similar number of publications enjoyed the support of the project indirectly, say by discussions of the visitors with the local researchers or by presenting results, problems and methods during the formal and informal talks, etc. During the project, two smaller workshops, and two bigger conferences were organized, altogether in 6 weeks. It is very exceptional that four such combinatorial events are organized in four consecutive years in the same (small) country. The highlight was the closing conference with more than 300 participants.
