Internet translation tool for tourist information

Hundreds of thousands of tourist destinations are finding the Internet an ideal means to advertise cheaply and effectively. The problem for the would be tourist is that, in many cases such advertising is in a language they can't understand. MIETTA, an Internet-based translation tool, hurdles language barriers to translate such information into the required language.

Tourism is a multi-billion Euro industry that has seen a growing number of tourists keenly “designing” their own holiday packages. Since many Internet pages are written in foreign languages, MIETTA (Multilingual Information Extraction for Tourism) offers these destination seekers a programme that assists them, translating documents into a language they understand.

MIETTA integrates a broad range of technologies such as, free-text search and retrieval and pure database entry facilities on the Internet. It automatically translates retrieved documents into the preferred language, allowing users to extract information from any site related to their travel destinations, regardless of the language barriers.

Currently, the system is working with information from Rome in Italy, Saarland in Germany and Turku in Finland and can be translated into German, English, Finnish, Italian and French.

An additional feature to MIETTA is that it gathers, stores and makes available user-profile information automatically, so that marketing strategies on tourism can be best tailored to suit travellers. So whilst the would-be tourist is targeting travel destinations, holiday markets are focusing on the tourist without having to incorporate the expense of translated documentation to do so.
