Portable betatrons for non-destructive testing

High energy X-ray radiography can be an important part of a quality control program. Portable betatrons provide such energy and are used for Non Destructive Testing (NDT) of materials and products in several applications and at most work sites.

The betatron is a circular induction accelerator used for electron acceleration. The word betatron derives from the fact that high-energy electrons are often called beta particles. The betatron produces radiographs of very high contrast, sensitivity and resolution, providing an ideal replacement for isotopes (such as Cobalt-60), which are more costly and give poorer quality.

The portable betatron is a compact, circular electron accelerator producing a high-energy directional X-ray beam. Small-size betatrons are used in radiographic control of materials and products quality under non-stationary conditions such as civil constructions. Common fields of application are the testing of welded joints, bridge piers, castings, dense metals, and reinforced concrete structures. It can also be utilized at gas processing facilities to determine the condition of stop valves in oil or gas pipelines or even to detect internal corrosion or erosion on valves or fittings.

A prototype small-size pulsed betatron has been designed for NDT of materials and products but also for the solution of applied and scientific problems. It demonstrates outstanding technical characteristics and at the same time has a low cost in comparison with other accelerators. Among its main advantages is the narrow pattern of the beam direction, which results in less radiation danger in operation under non-stationary conditions.

The betatron gives good image sharpness due to small sizes of focal spot and is made of reliable fast-acting electronic circuits for protection of the power circuits. It is easy to transport, operate and maintain and ensures a low output of faulty X-ray pictures thanks to both built-in and remote dosimetry systems.
