New All Terrain Vehicle conquers old terrain

In order to conduct rescue operations in extremely difficult terrain by motor vehicles, rescue personnel require expensive and suitably engineered All Terrain Vehicles (ATVs). While only a few select and expensive modules can negotiate these rough terrains, the negotiation is slow and difficult and often results in critical damage of the rescue vehicles themselves.

Genuine ATV's are expensive, highly engineered vehicles that are designed to cut across the most rugged terrain possible. Their limitation is however severe, as there are all too often, terrain types over which the average ATV simply cannot negotiate. Steep inclines with loose gravelling, rocky paths, ravines, gullies and other forms of broken terrain almost always prove to be too much.

This is a particular problem both for cross-country motor sports as well as rescue personnel who are often required to transport emergency equipment over incredibly difficult terrain. In an attempt to answer this problem, a German engineering firm has developed the "Alligo" ATV. What makes this ATV different from others is not its four-wheel drive with lockable differential gear system, but its double body hulls with their connecting swivel. This unique feature ensures that at all times a minimum of three wheels make contact with the ground at any given time.

Combined with this feature the optimised placement of its centre of gravity gives this vehicle the capacity to negotiate extreme slopes. Additionally, the Alligo also has a higher driving speed and is suitable for amphibian use both along coastal and marshy terrains. Its lower production values are due to its simple but hardy construction specifications, making it highly attractive for industrial development. Currently, several prototypes are available for testing, and the manufacturers are looking for a number of agreements including manufacturing and marketing agreements.
