Efficient treatment of cancer or infectious diseases

Although chemotherapy is currently one of the most important treatment methods against cancer, there are still many cases where cell resistance may potentially appear. Motivated by this, a French company with increased expertise in the biochemistry field recently developed a combined preparation of active substances and chemotherapy agents. The patented product is in the form of a kit-of-parts and may be used for treating cancer or infectious diseases.

Chemotherapy is one of the key widely applicable methods for treating cancer using specific chemical agents or drugs that are selectively destructive to malignant cells or tissues. Used either to treat or control the disease, chemotherapy drugs normally attack tumour cells locally and cause cell necrosis. Although most chemotherapy drugs display increased efficiency, in many cases cellular resistance to these agents may appear after treatment.

In order to enhance clinical response to chemotherapy drugs and prevent the appearance of chemoresistance, a newly developed combination of monocyte-derived macrophages and chemotherapy is offered. This is actually a combined preparation of active substances in the form of a kit-of-parts that comprises monocytes derived cells, mainly cytotoxic macrophages, (MAK ®) and chemotherapy agents. The monocytes-derived cells can serve as drug vectors and in combination with chemotherapy agents, they may be simultaneously, sequentially or separately used.

Apart from cell necrosis, this effective tool allows the release of chemokines, which activate macrophages and monocytes-derived cells. In this way, chemotherapy acts in synergy with cellular immunotherapy to enhance cells cytotoxicity and advance immune response while preventing resistance. Apart from tumours, this product may be selectively toxic to any causative agent of an infectious disease, including a virus, bacterium, or other microorganism.
